New Kitten

NewNew Kitten Exams

We recommend that kittens start visiting the clinic at 6 weeks of age.

Our recommendations

for the

first visit are

listed down below

:: Heartworm/Flea Medication ::

Depending on age and weight of your kitten we send home the first complimentary dose of the appropriate heartworm/flea medication at the first visit. Heartworm/flea medication is vital to keeping your new baby free of heartworms, fleas and intestinal parasites.

:: Healthy Advantage Kitten Food ::

A sample of Healthy Advantage kitten food will also be sent home on the first visit.  Nutrition is a key part of your puppies wellness program.

:: Intestinal Parasite Exam ::

This allows us to treat the following common parasites.  Hookworms, roundworms, whip worms and coccidia.

:: FIV/FeLV Test ::

Testing your kitten for FIV/FeLV can help in determining the lifestyle of your pet and how to treat common issues that may arise for your pet.  Initial testing should be done as a kitten around 6 weeks old.

:: FVRCP Vaccine ::

 Feline respiratory diseases are highly contagious among cats and kittens.  The vaccination is highly recommended for all cats and kittens.  Kittens start the vaccine at 6 weeks of age, and then booster the vaccine every three weeks until the kitten has reached the age of 15-17 weeks.  The vaccination should be given again one year after initial vaccination series and then every three years.

:: Leukemia ::

This is a high-mortality disease.  Feline leukemia produces immunosupression, which can lead to other diseases, infections or forms of cancer.  It is transmitted by direct contact with other infected cats, infected food dishes or litter boxes.  This vaccination is highly recommended intitially for all cats and kittens, and annually for cats going outdoors or in high risk environments.  Kittens start vaccine at 12 weeks of age, and then again in three weeks.

:: Rabies ::

This virus attacks the central nervous system and is fatal.  The rabies vaccine is required by law. Puppies are given the vaccine at 12 weeks of age. One year after the initial vaccine, you can choose a one year or three year vaccine.

:: Spay/Neuter ::

We recommend your puppy be altered

at about

six months of age.

:: Why are multiple vaccine boosters necessary for my puppy/kitten? ::

Unlike adult dogs and cats, puppies and kittens need a series of vaccinations to maintain protection as they mature.  Between the ages of 6-15 weeks of age, your puppy or kitten will need vaccinations every three weeks.  Young animals have maternal antibodies that compete with the vaccinations we administer, thus causing the immunity to be short lived.  After fifteen weeks of age, their maternal antibodies are gone and the last vaccine will produce a more long lasting immunity.
